The Jennie Lynn Hanson Award was established in memory of Jennie, who, at age 21, was killed along with her mother, two sisters, a brother, and her infant son, Isaiah, on July 1, 1998, in a tractor-trailer crash west of Phoenix, Arizona. Jennie lived most of her life in Las Cruces and, after a tumultuous childhood, was ready to make a better life for herself and her son. This scholarship is offered in hope that those of us left behind will strive to modify the aspects of our lives and our world that lead to reckless physical and emotional treatment of our fellow humans – to avoid the blind spots of our culture that cause tragedies like the one that killed Jennie and her family.
