Brenda Porter was born in Las Cruces and grew up attending Las Cruces Public Schools. She graduated from LCHS and attended NMSU receiving her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education with an Early Childhood certification and a minor in Counseling and Educational Psychology. She received her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction also from NMSU. Her entire teaching career was spent in Las Cruces at Washington Elementary and Hillrise Elementary, mostly Kindergarten through 2nd grades, as well as spending a year as a facilitator for gifted students with the Advanced Education Program. She along with another colleague, Sheila Bullock, started the first multi-age program in Las Cruces incorporating Kinder, first and second graders in the same classroom. The concept focused on individualized assessment and instruction geared to the academic level of each child while meeting the mandated curriculum for the grade level and addressing social and emotional needs of students. Brenda retired after teaching for 25 years and is now an Associate Broker with Steinborn and Associates Real Estate. She has participated in a variety of community organizations including the Las Cruces Teacher’s Center, La Casa, and NMSU President’s Associates. She is a founding member of the Junior League of Las Cruces. Currently, Brenda serves on the NMSU Foundation Board of Directors and is President of the Aggie Athletic Club Board of Advisers.
