Brenda Smith recognized as the Canutillo Independent School District Teacher of the Year
Brenda Smith, received her degree in Secondary Education in 1980 from the College of Education at New Mexico State University. Ms. Smith teaches theater arts at Canutillo Middle School, where she has taught since 2007. Before moving to Canutillo Middle School, Ms. Smith taught theater arts and broadcast journalism for twenty-seven years in the Gadsden ISD, where she was twice recognized as Santa Teresa High School’s Teacher of the Year. In 1992, she was named the Gadsden ISD Teacher of the Year. She has also received the Excellence in Education Award from Phi Beta Kappa and the Quality Education Award from the University of New Mexico.
In her role as a theater arts teacher Ms. Smith encourages the 200 students who enroll in her program every year to find the courage to create comic and dramatic characters and share genuine emotion in front of an audience, often in a language other than their primary language. With proper guidance and support Ms. Smith believes that all students can learn, and she uses her classroom to create an environment where students can achieve success.
Ms. Smith will be recognized as the Canutillo ISD Teacher of the Year on Saturday, August 11, at the ESC Region 19 Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year Gala held at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center.
