In an effort to expand learning opportunities for teachers, NMSU and Texas A&M University are funding an online professional development on content area reading to better serve our local student population.
We are offering a set of 3 short self-paced online courses on content area reading. This is great for new teachers, instructional coaches, and teachers wishing to help their students improve reading non-fiction texts.
Our approach uses the Text Structure Strategy. The focus is for students to read science, social studies, and other nonfiction text with good comprehension and to have strategies to do so. While some students do this well, others are still in need of instruction.
This PD set of courses is based on our text structure reading comprehension framework that has been proven effective with monolingual English speakers and Spanish speaking English learners.
This text structure intervention has received the What Works Clearinghouse stamp of approval: https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/Docs/SingleStudyReviews/wwc nonfiction 070213.pdf
Applicants must be K-8 educators.
Tuition for the 3 certificate courses will be paid through a federal SEED grant Supporting Effective Educator Development. Additionally, 10% of the top completers will be eligible to receive tuition for 3 graduate level courses (MA or Ph.D. program).
This online PD begins May 2019 and goes through 2020. The courses are self-paced. The link to register is: https://itss.literacy.io/Register/MOOV
