Introduction

A local historian is writing a book for elementary aged students on Native Americans of Texans. He wants the students to become familiar with Native Americans and their cultures through the experiences of their peers. In doing so he is asking that you be the investigator of this quest.


The Task

In this quest you will learn about the history and culture of Native Americans in Early Texas. You will then be able to identify various tribe names and compare historical aspects of their cultures. This information will enhance your knowledge and appreciation of Texas Native American Culture as well as becoming a co-author of a valuable and educational children's book.

The Process

1. You and a partner will locate the Comanche, Lipan Apache, Jumanos, Caddos, Tonkawas, Karankawas, and the Coahuiltecan tribes on the World Wide Web as well as literature that can be located in your school library.

2. Have you ever wondered how the early people of Texas lived? Your job is to research native American groups and to learn about their lifestyle. For example the type of homes they lived in, the food they ate, the jobs that they did, their type of dress and their religious beliefs.

3. Now it's your turn to become an author! Choose a word processing program with which you fell comfortable. Compose a page for each letter of the alphabet to describe the life of Early Texas Native Americans.


Evaluation

Find a word that begins with a letter of each letter of the alphabet relating to the lives and cultures of the Indians that you have studied. Compose your alphabet book using this vocabulary. Illustrate each page using Kid Pix or ClarisWorks.


Conclusion

In this WebQuest you have learned about Native American Groups of Texas and their cultures. You are now familiar with aspects of their lives and have become the author and illustrator of a soon to be famous book. Congratulations on a successful endeavor!
