Introduction:

You and the members of this class have been given 10,000 acres of land on which you are to design and build a community for youth, with a maximum population of 1000 young people. You are to provide for the community's needs and utilize strict conservation practices for air, land, water, to include a community-wide recycling plan. This project will be developed as a co-operative endeavor. This means that all members of the community have equal ownership and responsibility for developing and maintaining a productive community. Each member of the community will begin with sufficient funds to purchase basic needs (housing, transportation, etc), but must work to increase those funds for any "extras" (movies, furnishings, groceries, recreation, etc.).

The Task:

You are a member of one of seven groups: Industrial, Recreation, Residential (Housing), Commercial, Educational, Government, and Agricultural. The task within each group is to brainstorm and develop a plan for your subcommunity, making sure that the personal and conservation needs are met. Each committee must provide a plan for the amount of acreage its subcommunity will require, where it will be located and rationale for location, and a description of the role your subcommunity will play in the overall community. You will be given an allotted time in which to develop your plan before presenting it to the entire group for community consensus and assignment of your plot of land. Once your plot has been designated, you must work within your subcommunity to develop and utilize nearby resources, always considering wise conservation practices with recycling as an integral part of your plan. Be sure to take into consideration such things as transportation, landscaping, waste disposal, and noise factors when developing your plan.

Conclusion:

Upon completion of all tasks, the learners should acquire a much more thorough understanding of forming and expanding community life. Conservation of resources is an important facet of community life in this time of diminishing resources. A better understanding of the importance of sound conservation practices will provide better citizens in tomorrow's communities.
