Careers in Education

A degree in Education can be useful in many occupations, however, most students pursuing a degree in education become teachers, librarians, counselors or administrators. Teachers can have great impact on the social, personal, and intellectual development of individuals. Teachers can be found in almost every sector of society, and they instruct a wide range of topics. Aspiring teachers who need certification may also enter programs that grant a master's degree in education, as well as certification.

Teacher Pay & Working Conditions

  • Median annual earnings of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $37,610 to $42,080 in 2000; the lowest 10 percent earned $23,320 to $28,460; the top 10 percent earned $57,590 to $64,920. US Department of Labor
  • The average salary for traditional public school teachers increased 4.5 percent in 2006-07 to $51,009, according to the AFT's latest teacher salary survey, marking the first time average teacher pay exceeded $50,000 and the first time since 2003 that teacher salaries surpassed the annual rate of inflation.   • It's a myth that teachers work short days and don't have to think about work all summer. Many teachers spend a lot of time outside of the classroom preparing lessons, grading homework, taking continuing education classes and coaching sports or academic teams.   • Librarians don't just work in public or school libraries. Some work for research departments or private companies, while others do research, order materials, or assist the public. Many library resources are computerized.
  • Computer skills are important for education workers. Many classrooms have computers, even in kindergarten.
