College of Education Alternative Licensure Program in Special Education

The College of Education at New Mexico State University has developed a special education alternative licensure program for persons who hold at least a baccalaureate degree, but have not completed a traditional teacher preparation program. In order to qualify for the Special Education Alternative Licensure Program at New Mexico State University, a candidate must have a contract with a district as a teacher in special education.
Prerequisites
- Bachelor's degree with 30 hours in content area
- Employment as a SPED teacher with an Internship(waiver)license
- Admission to NMSU Graduate School and SPED/CD Department
Program
- 21 Graduate credit hours
- Online program through NMSU Distance Education
- Approved by NM State Department of Education

- SPED 501 High Incidence Disabilities
- SPED 502 Low Incidence Disabilities
- SPED 504 Classroom Assessment of EL
- SPED 509 Reading K-6 for EL
- SPED 511 Reading 7-12 for EL
- SPED 559 Classroom Management of EL
