College of Education School Counseling Licensure Course of Study

The College of Education (COE) at New Mexico State University (NMSU) has developed a school counseling licensure course of study for persons who hold at least a baccalaureate degree, but have not completed a traditional preparation program. In order to qualify for the School Counseling Licensure Course of Study at NMSU, a candidate must have a contract with a district as a school counselor.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor's degree in an education related field.
  • Employment as a School Counselor with a Substandard (waiver) license.
  • Admission to NMSU Graduate School and Counseling & Educational Psychology Department.

School Counseling Licensure Course of Study

  • 36 Graduate credit hours Online.

  • CEP 522 Organization & Administration of School Counseling Services

  • CEP 552 Career/Life Planning & Vocational Assessment
  • CEP 558 Child and Adolescent Counseling Theory and Technique
  • CEP 566 Group Work Theory & Technique
  • CEP 584 Student Services Internship (6 credits)
  • EDUC 568 Educational Uses of Computers (Technology & Pedagogy)

Note: Licensure as a School Counselor in New Mexico requires a Master's degree in addition to the above licensure course of study as well as hold a valid New Mexico level II teaching license or have three years of documented, verified satisfactory experience in one or a combination of the following areas: (a) teaching, educational administration, or school counseling; (b) clinical practice; and/or (c) mental health work.
