New Mexico-Preparing Autism Specialists (NM-PASS)

This four year personnel preparation project will prepare a total of 21 educators that will have the knowledge and skills required to provide a high quality education using research-based practices which will improve outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse children with ASD and work effectively with their families.
Participants in this project will earn a Master of Arts in Education with a Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders and be able to apply for a special education teaching license. Students who have a special education teaching license can opt for the Master of Arts in Education with a Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Students pursuing other licensure, in conjunction with a Master's degree, will be considered.

Available Funding

Students participating in the grant will receive:

  • Graduate student tuition for four semesters
  • Graduate student tuition for summer session
  • Monthly stipend of $700
  • Annual book stipend of $450
  • Travel for conference attendance Requirements of the Grant
  • Enroll in at least 9 credit hours per semester
  • Enroll in a total of 6 credit hours in summer session (3 credit hours for Autism Summer Camp in Summer Session 1)
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • Maintain satisfactory progress in completing the degree

Complete the Master's degree with a Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders in 2 years, including summer

Service Obligation
Students funded under the grant must work in a special education setting for two years for every year of funding. Eligible employment includes a setting where 51% of the children receive special education, related services, or early intervention or where the grant participant spends at least 51% of his/ her time providing special education, related services, or early intervention. This service obligation must begin within five years of graduation.

Students who have been accepted as a graduate student at NMSU must submit a letter of application including a rationale for receiving funding to Dr. Kathleen Cronin.

Students who are not NMSU students must apply to the University, Graduate School, and Special Education/Communication Disorders program. To be considered for the project, please submit a letter of application and unofficial copies of your transcript to Dr. Kathleen Cronin.
