The Department of Special Education & Communication Disorders offers programs designed for students with career goals as master special education teachers, special education consultants and directors, educational diagnosticians and speech-language pathologists in school, community, and medical settings, or as higher education faculty in the fields of special education and communication disorders.

The annual Roush award recognizes NMSU faculty for teaching excellence. It is named for a former university executive vice president in recognition of his 35 years of teaching improvement in New Mexico.
