Michael Gallegos was born in El Paso, Texas on May 27, 1970. He immediately became the “star” of the family which ultimately included his grandparents-Rex and Sara Steffey, parents-Robert and Anne Gallegos, and sisters-Amy and Heather. Michael had a huge and radiant smile. Throughout the ten years he attended Las Cruces Public Schools, Michael participated in a variety of sports. He especially loved football and was a member of an undefeated sophomore team at Las Cruces High. Michael dreamed of joining the Air Force after graduation from high school. As a student with learning disabilities, Michael was especially sensitive to issues of equity and opportunity. When Michael passed away at the age of 17, his grandparents and parents created the Michael Gallegos Memorial Scholarship. The award is given annually to a senior in the College of Education who is studying special education, and who intends to work with high school students with learning or behavioral disabilities.
