Dr. Delamater was born in upstate New York where he attended public school. He received the bachelor of science degree from famed Springfield college (where both basketball and volleyball were invented), served 4 ½ years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, received both the Master of Arts and Doctor of Education degrees from Columbia University. He was physical education department head at New Mexico Tech for 12 years. He became department head at New Mexico State University in 1958 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1981.
During that period the department of health, physical education and recreation was moved from its old home in Williams Gymnasium on University Avenue (now the home of the Art Department) to the 25 acre plot where it is now located. He presided over the construction of Rentfrow Gymnasium, the Natatorium and the original 50-meter converted swimming facility, the Activity Center, the original 20 tennis courts (since converted to student parking), the track and field facility, and intramural and instructional field areas. During this period he also developed outstanding program in health, physical education, student recreation, and dance.
