Homer Heathman was born August 5, 1918 in Oakland City, Indiana. He attended the Public Schools in Oakland City and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Oakland City College in 1940. He received his Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of New Mexico in 1952. Homer also served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. Homer’s work experience includes teaching for two years in the Oakland City Public Schools. He also taught for 6 ½ years in the Artesia Public Schools in Artesia. From 1955 to 1954, he served as Assistant Director of School Buildings and Finance with the New Mexico State Department of Education in Santa Fe. Homer then served as the Business Manager for the Clovis Public Schools from 1954 to 1955. He then became Budget Auditor for the Department of Education in Santa Fe from 1955-1959. Homer then was the Finance Director of the Las Cruces Public Schools from 1959 to 1967. Homer died July 4, 197 of cancer. He was survived by his wife, Mary, of 26 years and four children, James, Elaine, Kenneth, and Homer III.
