Working across the university with mathematicians, scientists, educational researchers, and public school community leaders, faculty and staff in the College of Education have built a mathematics and science research and outreach group that includes a broad range of research and outreach grants.

The institute has also led a long-term leadership effort to build and coordinate K-20 STEM Education efforts at NMSU and across the state of New Mexico. The institute was founded by Dr. Prentice Baptise, Dr. Karin Wiburg and Dr. Susan Brown in 2006.

Currently Dr. Susan Brown directs and coordinates science education grant projects and Wanda Tamez directs the math grants. The institute fulfills NMSU's land grant mission by serving over 20 partner districts and their schools from Raton to Hobbs to Gadsden. Around 40,000 students and their families as well as over 1000 teachers benefited from the numerous outreach programs available in the NMSU College of Education.
