Scientifically Connected Communities (SC2), based at New Mexico State University, is dedicated to improving the scientific literacy of southern New Mexico students by providing professional development to 4th-8th grade teachers that emphasizes critical-thinking strategies and pedagogy to enhance scientific inquiry for all students. SC2 collaborates with a network of teachers, scientists, administrators, and district leaders to increase teacher science content knowledge, promote scientific inquiry curriculum, and to provide resources and materials for the classroom.
Spotlight
Scientifically Connected Communities (SC2) is hosting a workshop (Medicinal Plants of the Southwest) for 4th/5th grade teachers and middle school science teachers on Thursday, Sept. 18th at NMSU from 8:30am-3:00pm. Dr. Mary O’Connell, a professor from NMSU Agronomy and Horticulture will facilitate a session for teachers that focuses on biochemistry. Ray Bowers, president of the local Native Plant Society chapter will lead teachers on a short hike to observe and identify plants. A botany classification lab will also be conducted that teachers can use in their classrooms. There will be a working lunch to share ideas about using the science content in the classroom. Space is limited. SC2 is excited to collaborate with these experts and share resources with teachers. The registration deadline will be Sept. 12th.
