Mission
Cultural and Linguistic Perspectives of Emergent Literacy: An EJournal
is a publication of the Southwest Institute for Early Childhood Studies at New Mexico State University. The journal focuses on emergent literacy research in culturally and linguistically diverse settings and implications for later literacy development. We invite manuscripts that explore early literacy development from birth to kindergarten.
The mission of the journal is to examine research-based knowledge that can provide a deeper understanding of literacy acquisition for young children, including numeracy, particularly from cultural and linguistic perspectives. These perspectives can support cultural responsiveness and recognition of the richness reflected in the myriad of primary languages and cultural experiences young children represent. The editors believe the context of young children in relationship to their beginning cultural and linguistic environment is the rich foundation for a successful life-long adventure with literacy.
