Footnotes - Sweep and Swing
A shared performance with the Doña Ana Lyric Opera & NMSU Dance Program
The Little Sweep is from Benjamin Britten’s larger piece “Let’s Make an Opera.” Composed in 1949, it is the story of a chimney sweep, nine-year-old Sam, who his rescued from a cruel existence by the adolescent residents of a Victorian country house. Based on a character introduced in William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence,” it offers a spirited introduction to the world of opera for the young and young at heart.
For twenty years Doña Ana Lyric Opera(DALO)has been bringing music theater and operatic classics to New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, and the surrounding region. With a special emphasis on opportunities for the student performer, DALO has called upon the talents and contributions of alumni, faculty and gifted members of the community to play prominent roles in the success of its over fifty productions.
Swing is a suite of dances choreographed to music composed by Ira Gershwin. NMSU Dance Ensemble and DanceSport join together to present lyrical and upbeat dances, which will have the audience snapping their fingers and tapping their feet.
