Audience: This online graduate-level course was created to provide aspiring adapted physical educators assistance in preparing for the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) examination. The APENS are fifteen identified competencies that an adapted physical educator should be on familiar terms with when teaching physical education to children with disabilities. Passing this exam leads to receiving the national Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE) advanced certification for a period of 7 years.

PEP 558 students will learn/review the APENS content by:

  • chatting with experts in the field from all around the country

  • preparing for the APENS exam with test question-like self-quizzes

  • exploring the APE online community

  • discussing with colleagues real-life occurrences during the service delivery of APE

  • reviewing downloadable materials covering APENS-related content

News Flash:

Upon completion of this course, PEP 558 students can take the APENS exam in their home town. Arrangements can be made during the semester.

  • This email should include:

    • In the Subject title of the email, type "PEP 558 Student Enrollment"

    • Your full name

    • Your city and state of residence

    • Your NMSU username assigned by the NMSU registrar

  • Since this course is delivered online, it is necessary for students to demonstrate the ability to communicate via the Internet and to indicate their involvement in this course to the professor. Dr. Pedersen will respond to every email that is received. If no response is returned, that means the email was not received. Re-check the email address (my last name is spelled pedersen) and the subject title and send the email again. If there still is no response, contact Dr. Pedersen by phone (575) 646-2071. It is the student's responsibility to ensure email contact is established with Dr. Pedersen.

Once you have contacted Dr. Pedersen by email indicating that you have registered for PEP 558, you will use NMSU's WebCT to access the PEP 558 APENS Professional Preparation course content. WebCT participation will not be made available for the student until this step is completed.
