We welcome you NMCTM, the New Mexico Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of NCTM, I want to thank you for committing to build our organization through its most important partners--the affiliates. Through the affiliates you have a real voice in what happens nationally in NCTM and with math education in our country. The affiliates provide the opportunity to make a real impact in improving math education for all children.

I think you'll find great support in the affiliates. This newsletter is asking you to renew your membership or join NMCTM. A registration form is included in this mailing

NMCTM will partner with NMSTA for a state math and science conference October 12-13. The 80th NCTM meeting will be in Las Vegas, Nevada April 21-24 2002. Plan to attend. Looks like a great year for professional growth in math!

NCTM Board of Directors

MATHEMATICS STANDARDS REVISION will be taking place during 2001-2002. We will use the NCTM Principles and Standards as the Framework, and will write performance standards for each grade K through 8, and for grades 9-12. Please contact Steve Sanchez at the State Department of Education, 505-827-3644, if you would like to participate.

The State Department of Education and the education community will miss Mary Niekirk as the State Mathematics Coordinator. She is going to teach at a school in Sante Fe. Good Luck Mary and thanks for a job well done.

Enjoy - Cathy Kinzer

Have you visited the NCTM website? http://www.nctm.org It has so many resources as well as important information, and meeting dates. Also check out the resources on Illuminations http://www.illuminations.nctm.org
Here's an "illumination" indeed of the newly revised National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) math principles and standards. The site includes Web-based multimedia activities, video vignettes of teaching and learning, lesson plans, and a rich network of links.

Thanks to Dr. Jennifer Villa and the MathStar Project at New Mexico State University for supporting our organization by developing a web site for us. http://education.nmsu.edu/nmctm Please send announcements and interesting math news to Cathy at cakinzer@nmsu.edu for posting on the site. We need to develop our site so that it can serve our math community.

Thanks to Dr. Rick Scott and NMSU CETP for helping make our newsletter possible. Have a wonderful summer and please begin to help build our website with support for our mathematics communities.
