| Welcome to NMCTM, the New
Mexico Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
The voices of New Mexico teachers can be heard through the New Mexico Council of Teachers of Mathematics, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Through the affiliates we have the opportunity to play a part in what happens nationally in NCTM and with math education in our country. The affiliates provide the opportunity to make a real impact in improving math education for all children and develop a professional community of math educators. This fall newsletter is helping inform you of important upcoming events and information. We are asking you to renew your membership or join NMCTM. A registration form is included at the bottom of this page. NMCTM will partner with the State Learning Conference in Albuquerque October 11th and 12th. If you are interesting in presenting please call Claudia Ahlstrom 505-827-8489 before September the 15th. Please use the enclosed form for registration or go to the mathstar.nmsu.edu website for a link to the Learning Conference and registration information (mathstar.nmsu.edu). Look for the meeting for our NMCTM group at the Learning Conference. See you in Albuquerque for the Learning Conference and the balloon fiesta! New Mexico Mathematics Standards are now available. will be taking place during 2001-2002. We will use the NCTM Principles and Standards as the Framework, and will write performance standards for each grade K through 8, and for grades 9-12. Please contact Steve Sanchez at the State Department of Education, 505-827-3644, if you would like to participate. The State Department of Education and the math education community would like to welcome Claudia Ahlstrom as the new math coordinator for the state. She brings a wealth of experiences and knowledge. Her contact information is cahlstrom@sde.state.nm.us and her phone number is 505-827-8489. Claudia will be visiting districts to support the standards work and to discuss the upcoming criterion tests at grades 4 and 8. Things are changing and NMCTM can help you stay informed. |
Have you visited the NCTM website? http://www.nctm.org
It has so many resources as well as important information, and meeting
dates. Thanks to the MathStar Project at New Mexico State University for supporting our organization by developing a web site for us. http://education.nmsu.edu/nmctm Please send announcements and interesting math news to Sheila Hills at sshills@nmsu.edu for posting on the site. We need to develop our site so that it can serve our math community. Thanks to Dr. Rick Scott and NMSU CETP for help in this effort.
