COUNSELING AND EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT GRADUATES RECEIVE RESEARCH AWARD
Valerie Van Horne Kerne and Phillip A. Kerne were awarded "Best Group Research Article of the Year" by the Association for Specialists in Group Work at the annual convention of the American Counseling Association in March. Valerie is a graduate of NMSU's Masters Program in Counseling, and Philip is a graduate of NMSU's Doctoral Program in Counseling Psychology. They co-authored the manuscript which one the award with NMSU Professor Michael Waldo. The manuscript, entitled "Therapeutic Factors in Guidance Versus Counseling Sessions of Domestic Violence Groups," was published in the December 2007 edition of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work. The manuscript reports findings from research exploring the therapeutic impact of interpersonal process group techniques in domestic violence prevention groups.
