Happenings & Highlights

Curriculum & Instruction

  • The Dove Learning Center was awarded $30,000 from the Paso del Norte Foundation for Project P.L.A.C.E.- Prior Learning Assessment Center for Early Childhood. The focus will be to develop an early childhood statewide model for prior learning assessment at the associate degree level.

Counseling & Educational Psychology

  • The most recent issue of The Counseling Psychologist (Vol. 30, 2002) reports on an innovative approach to preventing barriers to students' learning, which has resulted from collaboration between faculty in the College of Education, the School Behavioral Health Training Institute, and school personnel from throughout New Mexico. The manuscript (entitled "School linked prevention: Theory, science, and practice for enhancing the lives of children and youth") describes use of a "train the trainers" model for preparing teachers and other school personnel to lead workshops on preventing barriers to students' learning back in their schools. In one year, more than 115 school personnel learned to lead prevention workshops and offered the workshops to more than 1,150 teachers. Those teachers can employ what they learned with the approximately 35,000 students in their classes. In addition to being a highly efficient way to directly impact a large number of students, the program benefits schools by increasing their internal leadership resources and developing networks between professionals who are committed to enhancing learning. A full description of the program is available in The Counseling Psychologist. More information and leadership manuals are available from Michael Waldo (646-4095).

Educational Management & Development

  • With a generous grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the EMD Department is beginning a two-year project to update a major bibliography on American Indians. This bibliography pulls together all of the theses and dissertations written on American Indians in Canada, Mexico and the United States. When complete, Project Director Charles Townley believes that full bibliographic data will be provided for more than 13,000 entries. Last published in 1974 by the National Museum of the American Indian in 1974, the bibliography is considered critical in American Indian research because much American Indian knowledge is first reduced to writing as a part of graduate research. Therefore theses and dissertations become very important in documentation and preservation of history and culture.
  • *On September 16, 2002, Gloria Cano and Arturo Holguin of the United States General Accounting Office (GAO) met with Dr. Maria Luisa Gonzalez, Department Head of the EMD, to discuss the potential for students to engage in internships and full-time positions within the GAO. The GAO exists to help improve the performance and accountability of the federal government. According to Cano and Holguin, the internships are paid, and can be completed at any of the 11 sites that are located throughout the United States. Full-time positions are available at only a few sites, with the concentration being at headquarters, located in Washington, D. C. Dr. Gonzalez gave several options for the GAO to pursue, amongst them were part-time faculty summer consultancies, internship opportunities for graduate students who are in the process of completing either their Masters or Doctoral degrees, and the prospect for students to pursue a career after they graduate. The potential, according to Cano and Holguin, for students within the education realm at NMSU to be recruited is high, especially if the students have a strong analytical research foundation within their coursework. The GAO has four main goals, which are to provide timely, quality service to congress, to offer this service to the federal government, to support transition, and to maximize the value of the General Accounting Office (GAO).
  • *A Special Invitation to NMSU Higher Education Administration Students, Alumni, and Leaders to the Third Annual EMD Reception. For the past three years, EMD students, alumni, and faculty have organized the reception to provide a networking opportunity, to honor an outstanding area higher education leader, and to highlight the initiatives of EMD. This year the Community College Leadership Doctoral Program will be highlighted. The Reception will be on Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 6 p.m. in the West Ballroom of Corbett Center at NMSU. Please, RSVP by October 29, 2002 via e-mail at cpratt@nmsu.edu or by calling 646-3825. For more information e-mail Dr. Eduardo Arellano at edarella@nmsu.edu or call 646-1635.

Special Education/Communication Disorders

  • Kathleen Chinn, Eric Lopez, and Loretta Salas were awarded a small grant of $26,300 to assist in writing and submitting grant proposals to national funding agencies. They are working on a grant proposal that, if awarded, will fund the Deming Project which will be a longitudinal study looking at enculturation, development of languages, and appropriate assessment techniques for immigrant and migrant deaf children and their families.
  • The Communication Disorders program is pleased to share with you the results of a very successful recruitment campaign culminating in the arrival of 19 first year graduate students this semester. This represents a 100% increase in the number of graduate students who started their program a year ago (Kimbarow).
