Dr. Eric Lopez recieves Fulton Chair for the Improvement of Border and Rural Schools

Dear College of Education,

Dr. Eric Lopez

The purpose of this letter is to announce that Dr. Eric Lopez will become the first Fulton Chair for the Improvement of Border and Rural Schools. This will be made public during Spring Commencement (January 18, 2006).

Last year, Stan Fulton made a major gift to our college. With it, we endowed the Fulton Chair. It took a year for the endowment to begin generating funds. Some months back, we created a nomination/advisory committee of university and public school representatives to help in the selection of the first Fulton Chair. It considered a large group of nominees and then interviewed six finalists. I too interviewed the finalists and considered the input from the committee. The process resulted in multiple accolades for each applicant and a clear understanding that each is a person of quality. Choosing one from among the select six was a challenge.

Eric's background in bilingual special education/educational diagnostics and his university and public school backgrounds have prepared him well for the Fulton Chair. I'm excited about this appointment and I ask that you join me in congratulating Eric.
