Counseling and Educational Psychology represented at International Counseling Psychology Conference in Chicago

The department was represented at the International Counseling Psychology Conference in Chicago, IL that was held last week.

Thirteen current students, three alumni, three faculty and three adjunct faculty attended the Conference. Below are the many presentations that are given by the Department of CEP. Many of the attended heard very positive comments about NMSU from other attendees so it is nice to know that NMSU is getting noticed.

  • Dr. Eve Adams chaired the symposium, Voices in the Wilderness: Religious, Gay-Affirming Counseling Psychologists. Three of the papers in symposium were presented by the following doctoral students: Virginia Longoria presented, Religious LGBT allies: God knows they exist , Tracie Hitter presented, Addressing Values Conflicts with Conservatively Religious Psychology Trainees , and Natasha Ali presented, Reflections of a gay-affirming Muslim counseling psychology trainee.
  • Natasha Ali & Dr. Michael Waldo have a poster presentation entitled, Enhancing Conflict Mediation in Multicultural Contexts .
  • Dr. Adams chaired a symposium entitled, Graduate Psychology Education Grants in Counseling Psychology Programs and presented the paper, Primary Care Behavioral Health Training on the U.S.- Mexico Border .
  • Doctoral student Jason Vasquez and Dr. Rachel Navarro presented a paper entitled, Applying a Culturally Expanded Perspective of Holland's Theory to Latinas/os.
  • Dr. Eve Adams chaired an invited symposium entitled, Creating a Social Justice Focus in the Counseling Psychology Curriculum where she and Drs. Waldo & Navarro presenting the paper, Cultivating Counseling Psychology s Prevention and Social Justice Roots . Ralph Crabbe was the discussant for the symposium.
  • Dr. Michael Waldo chaired a symposium entitled, Counseling Psychology Prevention Efforts in Guatemala," and presented the paper, Preventive Group Work in Guatemala: Training and Action."
  • Doctoral students, Christine Benitez and Elizabeth Schall sent a poster presentation, Holocaust Survivors: A Study in Resilience and Recovery .
  • Doctoral students, Sandy Newsome and Virginia Longoria presented a poster session entitled, Training Helping Professionals in Self-Care through Mindfulness to Prevent Burnout: Changing Trends in Training with Dr. Michael Waldo.
  • Dr. Eve Adams gave a Continuing Education workshop entitled, Training Counseling Psychologists to Work in Medical Settings with several adjunct CEP faculty including Dr. Elaine Levine and Dr. Robert Mayfield.
  • Dr. Adams participated in a Speed Mentoring program that allows perspective and current doctoral students from all over the country to ask questions about the counseling psychology profession, and Dr. Waldo did the same with Early Career Professionals.
  • Dr. Eve Adams participated in an invited panel presentation on Training Values About Diversity .
