Awards
1999-2000
The past year was
a testament to the excellence of the CoE faculty, as they received many
prestigious awards. Dr. Abe Armendáriz was awarded the Patricia
Christmore Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Michael Nystul received the Donald
C. Roush Excellence in Teaching Award. The NMSU Faculty Achievement
Award (formerly the El Paso Energy Foundation Faculty Achievement Award)
went to Dr. James ODonnell.
In addition to our
college and university award recipients, the following individuals distinguished
themselves and the university by their performance. Dr. María
Luisa González, department head of Educational Management &
Development, was named President-elect of the University Council for
Educational Administration. UCEA is the most prestigious professional
association for educational administration in the nation and her election
as president is a great honor, not only for herself, but also for the
department, the college, and the university. During its Rocky Mountain
Regional Convention here in Las Cruces, the American Association for
the Advancement of Science presented its Larus Award to Susan Brown,
C&I doctoral candidate, for the best presentation at the three-day
conference. Ms. Brown presented the results of her dissertation in which
she qualitatively studied the requirements that will help bring more
minority and females into the science and engineering career path. She
has been invited to deliver her presentation to other regional conventions
and the national convention so that more individuals can hear her valuable
information. Dr. Enedina Vázquez, in a national election, was
elected Member at Large to the Executive Council of Division 45 of the
American Psychological Association. Assistant Professor Mario Martinez,
of the department of Educational Management & Development, was selected
as one of 12 board members named to the National Advisory Panel for
the State Report Card. The advisory panel, chosen by the National Center
for Public Policy and Higher Education, will examine all 50 states and
grade them on their higher education performance.
2000-2001

Dr. Carmen Gonzales received this year's El Paso Energy Foundation Faculty Achievement Award.

Dr. Hermán García was named this year's recipient of the Joseph M. Montoya Award, an award that recognizes a New Mexican who has made significant contribution at the national level to bilingual education. Dr. Beth Calhoon of the department of Special Education/Communication Disorders was elected as Vice President of the Technology and Media Division (TAM) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). CEC is the international professional organization for special educators. Dr. Cheryl Coker was named to Who's Who in American Education (6th Edition).
Dr. Carmen Gonzales was tenured and promoted to associate professor. Dr. Cheryl Coker was promoted to associate professor.
Educational Management & Development held their second annual reception for current candidates and alumni of the higher education administration program. The department honored Dr. Ramón Domínguez as the Outstanding EMD Alumnus at this well attended event.
