On-Going Assessment Stages For Candidate Performance
Teacher Education (Initial)

Stages: Responsible:
  1. Admitted To New Mexico State University
    1. Identify academic deficiencies of students.
    2. Take appropriate general education courses. Math and English assigned based on student abilities.
Faculty/Staff Registrar/Advisement
  1. Pre-Requisites Prior to Applying for Admission to Teacher Education
    1. 55 hours completed
    2. 2.5 GPA
    3. Meet all education course pre-requisites
    4. Pass NMTA Basic Skills Exam
    5. Complete appropriate general education classes
    6. Participate in a service activity
    7. Complete early field experience

Decision Point I: Meets Admission Standards
  1. Application to Teacher Education Program
    1. Submit portfolio including the following:
      1. Transcripts
      2. Written Philosophy
      3. Proof of Work and/or Volunteer Activities
      4. Written Statements About Diversity and Working with Children who have Disabilities
      5. Recommendations from Faculty *(Dispositions/Professional Behavior)
      6. Recommendations from Teachers and Employers
      7. Transcript
      8. Resume
Student/Advisement
    1. Faculty Committee Reviews Application
      1. Writing is evaluated
      2. Transcript is evaluated
      3. Rubrics are used to evaluate writing and overall portfolio presentation
      4. Portfolio is scored

Decision Point II: Faculty Review of Candidate’s Application
    1. Decision on Admission is made by a Faculty Committee
      1. Student is notified of decision

Decision Point III: Faculty Admit Candidate To Internship/Student Teaching

    1. Ongoing formative assessment by cooperating teacher/university supervisor
    2. Utilize state competencies and NCATE guidelines to assess student teacher performance
    3. Students present a portfolio for review by supervisor and faculty

Decision Point IV: Candidates Demonstrate Program Completion Criteria
    1. Summative assessment
      1. Pass student teaching and recommend for licensure, or
      2. Selective review hearing
        1. Remove from the program
        2. Participate in an intensive assistant program and then repeat student teaching
        3. Extend length of student teaching/li>
