Program Description

This Specialty is intended to help professionals in a variety of settings (e.g., community agencies, corrections, business, the military, and education) acquire knowledge and skills to provide guidance that enhances human development, relationships and success. It is not intended to prepare persons for professional licensure in counseling (e.g., licensed- professional counselor, school counselor, psychologist, social worker), and is not accredited by CACREP, NASP or APA.

Program Delivery

The Specialty requires 30 credit hours of course work that can be completed in two years of half-time time study. Almost all course work is delivered off-campus through distance education technology (Web CT) and field placement service learning (CEP 598). Nine days of intensive skill building in individual (CEP 504) and group (CEP 566) guidance procedures is conducted on campus during the summer. Students can complete service learning (CEP 598) at their employment setting.

  • $ 30.00 fee for admission to NMSU Graduate School.
  • $ 212.85 per credit hour for graduate instruction (there is a $25 per credit hour additional fee for Distance Education courses).
  • Books and web site access fees (vary by course).
  • Travel and per diem for face to face meetings.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University; Undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher; and Valid Graduate Record Exam score.
