Teacher Education Program (TEP) Admission

Full admission to the teacher licensure/degree program is a two-stage process. In the first stage, students declare themselves as College of Education majors and may enroll in pre-professional education-related courses, but they are not yet considered to be teacher candidates. To be so considered, students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) which requires:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 for Undergraduate students (a minimum of 55 earned semester hour credits) and 3.0 for Graduate students.
  • Competence in reading, mathematics, and composition as demonstrated by passing the New Mexico Teacher Assessment (NMTA) and Passing designated prerequisite courses with a grade of C or better.
  • Letter of intent demonstrating a desire to work with young people.
  • Submission of a Teacher Education Program (TEP) portfolio

After admission to the TEP, students complete their coursework and apply to student teach.
