Exercise Science
The Exercise Science Track is for students who are interested in understanding how the human body responds developmentally, physiologically, and mechanically to conditions of rest and exercise. Students will study, learn and understand human anatomy, anatomical movement, motor control, biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, and principles of strength and conditioning.
Students who complete the Exercise Prescription course will be well prepared (additional study is required) to sit for the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Health Fitness Instructor’s Certification. The ACSM is considered the leading organization in the world in the area of human performance.
Students who complete the Principles of Strength and Conditioning course will be prepared (additional study is required) to sit for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or the NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) exams. The NSCA is considered to be the leading organization in the world on strength and conditioning.
Students are required to take several elective courses in addition to their curriculum requirements. Depending upon the student’s goals, students will meet with the Department Head and select courses which best meet the requirements necessary for application into professional and graduate programs.
As a final degree requirement, students will perform a 12 credit internship program. The internship is the culmination of the student’s education and is designed to allow the student to “apply” their knowledge. Internships are coordinated through the Department Head and many requirements must be met prior to beginning this experience.
This track is an extremely rigorous program of scientific study and practical application. A student’s success is based on their application and desire to learn. This is not a degree program where we throw balls and play catch. The program is scientifically based and will test your aptitude. However, those who apply themselves will reap the benefits and achieve their individual goals leading to a successful career.
Minors
An optional Exercise Science Minor is available for non-majors. Students in fields of study such as Athletic Training, Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, Nutrition as well as other fields can benefit greatly from the knowledge associated with Human Performance. Curriculum requirements for the Exercise Science Minor can be obtained in Room 204, Student Activity Center.
