Brief Biography

Dr. Berning joined New Mexico State University as Director the Exercise Physiology Laboratory after completing his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2003.  Prior to working on his Ph.D., he served as a faculty member at the University of Louisville from 1998-2000.  His teaching responsibilities included both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of Exercise Science and Physiology.  In addition he served as adjunct faculty at Jefferson Community College, Louisville, Kentucky and Elizabeth Town Community College, Fort Knox, Kentucky teaching General Biology and Human Biology.  He received his Masters of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Louisville in 1998 and his Bachelors of Science Degree in Exercise Science from Iowa State University in 1988.

Dr. Berning’s research interests include applied and functional strength training where his most recent research has focused on Post-Activation Potentiation.  In addition he has collaborated with various colleagues at New Mexico State University, University of Louisville (Kentucky), Hanover College (Indiana), California State University Monterrey Bay (California), Boise State University (Idaho), and Australian Catholic University (Australia) in the areas of strength training with populations such as the aging, women, athletes and strength testing with non-traditional equipment.  In addition he has published on the topic of anabolic steroid use.
