The Reading, Language and Literacy program prepares individuals for professions in reading and literacy especially as they relate to language and cultural issues. This program, in conjunction with the Bilingual/TESOL specialization provides a broad perspective in understanding multi-bilingualism with a concentration on education for students whose native language is not English. Students will be encouraged to assume leadership and research positions in a variety of settings such as in schools (P-12), universities, community colleges, and/or research settings at the local, state and federal levels.
I. Prerequisites:
  Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Reading, Literacy or related field which included the following coursework (or appropriate equivalencies):
  EDUC 513 Research in Curriculum and Instruction 3 credits
  BIL 522 Literacy-Language Instruction for Bilingual Students 3 credits
  EDUC 568 Educational Uses of Computers 3 credits
  Admission to the doctoral program and interview with Reading, Language, and Literacy faculty. Doctoral programs can be individualized to each student's interests and needs and will be co-constructed with and approved by the student's chair and doctoral committee.
II. Core Courses in Curriculum & Instruction
(to be taken as prerequisites to specialization area courses)
12 credits
  EDUC 603 Curriculum for a Diverse Society 3 credits
  EDUC 604 Instruction for a Diverse Society 3 credits
  RDG 608 Critical Issues in Literacy Education 3 credits
  EDUC 613 Advanced Research Methods 3 credits
III. Specialization
All doctoral students in this specialization will take the following course:
15-19 credits
  RDG 610 Multiculturalism, Literature and Inquiry 3 credits
  All doctoral students in this specialization, in consultation with their doctoral committee, will choose from the following specialization courses:
  RDG 600 Doctoral Research in Literacy 3 credits
  RDG 630 Inquiry in Reading and Writing 3 credits
  RDG 640 Higher Education Teaching Apprenticeship 1-6 credits
  RDG 685 Advanced Internship in P-12 Literacy 1-6 credits
  RDG 698 Selected Topics in Literacy 1-6 credits
  and from the following additional cross-listed courses:
  RDG 616 Acquiring Emancipatory Discourses/
Discursos Emancipativos en la Educacion
3 credits
  RDG 617 Multiple Critical Literacies 3 credits
  RDG 619 Critical Literacies for Adult ESL Learners 3 credits
