Doctoral students in Early Childhood Education are expected to develop a sound theoretical background that is integrally linked to the practice of Early Childhood Education in a diverse, global community. Students are expected to develop professional abilities in the field through publication; research; service that includes program support and development, teacher supervision and mentoring, and advocacy activities; grant writing; and professional presentations.
I. Prerequisites: 12 credits.
  Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Early Childhood Education, Early Childhood Development, or related field. Admission to the doctoral program and interview with Early Childhood Education faculty.

Doctoral programs can be individualized to each student's interests and needs and will be co-constructed with and approved by the student's chair and doctoral committee.

II. Core Courses in Curriculum and Instruction

  EDUC 603 Curriculum for a Diverse Society 3 credits
  EDUC 604 Instruction for a Diverse Society 3 credits
  ECED 606 Inquiry in Early Childhood Education 3 credits
  EDUC 613 Advanced Research Methods 3 credits
III. Specialization
All doctoral students in this specialization, in consultation with their doctoral committee, will choose courses from the following Curriculum and Instruction and specialization courses:
15-19 credits
  ECED 605 Independent Study Topics in Early Childhood Education 1-3 credits
  ECED 607 Interdisciplinary Doctoral Seminar 3 credits
  ECED 612 History and Philosophy of Early Childhood Education 3 credits
  ECED 614 Families and Social Policy 3 credits
  ECED 636 Teacher Education and Professional Development 3 credits
  ECED 698 Selected Topics in Early Childhood Education 1-6 credits
  and from the following additional cross-listed courses:
  ECED 623 Curriculum and Instructional Leadership 3 credits
  ECED 633 Praxis and Reflexivity 3 credits
  EDUC 602 Internship 1-6 credits
