College of Education Research
As the state's land-grant university, NMSU's mission is to serve the educational needs of New Mexico's diverse population through comprehensive programs of education, research, extension education, and public service. The College of Education achieves this mission through active research and outreach partnerships in the areas of early childhood education; education for diverse populations; bilingual/TESOL education; students with special needs; effective leadership; STEM education; counseling and psychology; and human performance. In 2009-2010, the College of Education attracted over $10 million in external funding to support many of these projects.
Graduate Students Gain Recognition for ResearchTwo graduate students in the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department, Cynthia E. Guzmán and Ana Magallanes, have been recognized for their research on Marianismo (the traditional sexual code of behavior for Latinas that specifies feminine passivity, self-sacrifice, duty, honor, and sexual purity based on the cult of the Virgin Mary). Pierre Orelus Recognized as “Intellectual Freedom Fighter”A native of Haiti and a naturalized citizen of the U.S., Pierre Orelus, Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is a prolific writer who has written on issues, such as race, neocolonialism, transnationalism, language, multiracialism, literacy, gender, and multiculturalism. Students with Disabilities Attracted to STEM CareersElissa Poel, Associate Professor in SPED/CD, is a co-PI with Phillip King, Professor of Civil Engineering, in a project entitled Reaching the Pinnacle, funded by the National Science Foundation.
